Alexandria has lost over 90% of our affordable housing units since 2000. Canek is committed to increasing housing opportunities for all Alexandrians. As President of Tenants and Workers United and Chair of the Economic Opportunities Commission, he has worked to ensure Alexandria remains affordable for our first responders, young professionals, working families, and seniors aging in place.

Canek supports increasing the meals tax by 1% and restoring the affordable housing penny set-aside (currently at 0.6). Several local congregations have led the way in finding innovative ways to use their land to help increase housing opportunities for Alexandrians. Canek believes we not only need to celebrate these efforts, but also look for other ways to achieve our housing goals. If we truly value and want to celebrate diversity, then we must make a long-term commitment to addressing the housing needs of all our families.
