Making it official

Dear Friends,

When I chose to run for city council in 2018, I was tired of politics as usual. I was tired of parts of our community being ignored and I wanted to make sure that those voices that were missing from the decision-making table would finally echo all the way to City Hall.

Together, we made that a reality.

The changing of institutions and cultures however does not occur overnight. During my first year I began to take steps to make our city government more responsive to the needs of all Alexandrians. When the pandemic hit our community along with the rest of the world was changed forever, but the work did not stop.

The failure of the previous administration to implement a coordinated national strategy to combat the virus emphasized the importance of having thoughtful, knowledgeable leaders at the state and local level. As I’ve said before, I believe here in Alexandria we have continued to address challenges head on and I would stack our response to the pandemic up against any in the region.

In this third year there will be a heavy emphasis on our recovery now that vaccine distribution is underway. But there will be much more work to do in the months and years to come in order to secure the future success of our city and all its residents.

It is because of this that now more than ever we need not only capable leadership, but leadership that will continue to bring the perspective that isn't always seen. Leadership that will continue to work to ensure that our recovery is equitable and just for all. This is why I'm proud to announce that I have decided to run for re-election to the Alexandria City Council.

You know that I can't do this alone. I’m asking you to stand with me once again to continue this journey. Remember, no contribution is too small as we work to create the change that we wish to see.

Con mucho cariño y respeto,
-Canek
