Labor Unions Endorse Canek for Re-Election

Alexandria, Va. - Democrat Canek Aguirre is proud to receive the endorsement of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 26, the Baltimore/Washington Laborers’ District Council (BWLDC), Laborers’ International Union of North America (LiUNA), the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 689, and the Northern Virginia Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO (NoVA Labor) in his re-election campaign to the Alexandria City Council. Aguirre is currently serving in his first term.

"I am honored to have earned the support of Labor in my re-election bid," said Councilman Canek Aguirre. "My mom was a union member and I know the opportunities and stability provided to our family was because of hard fought victories of union members. That’s why I was proud to cast my vote to pass the first local collective bargaining ordinance in the Commonwealth in decades and support City employees' right to have a voice in the workplace. I will always stand on the side of working families in their fight for living wages, safe working conditions, access to paid sick and family leave, and the ability to retire with dignity."

Aguirre was one of the most vocal advocates to strengthen the collective bargaining ordinance recently passed by the Alexandria City Council. He has also fought to protect Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) custodial jobs. Prior to taking office, Aguirre supported Alexandria's DASH bus operators’ efforts to unionize.
