Councilman Canek Aguirre Named to Governor-Elect Spanberger's Transition Team

Alexandria Councilman Canek Aguirre has been appointed to Governor-elect Abigail Spanberger's United for Virginia's Future Transition Committee.

“I am honored to have been selected by Governor-elect Abigail Spanberger to serve on her transition team. I'm ready to get to work with leaders from across the Commonwealth to help lower costs for Virginia families, expand opportunity, strengthen our economy, and keep Virginia moving forward,” said Councilman Canek Aguirre.

Currently in his third term, Councilman Aguirre is the first Latino to ever serve on the Alexandria City Council. Aguirre represents Alexandria regionally on the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission, the Metropolitan Washington Council of Government’s Transportation Planning Board, and the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority’s Planning Coordination Advisory Committee. He is an alternate on both the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) Board of Directors and the Virginia Railway Express (VRE) Board of Directors.

Aguirre is Vice President of the Virginia Transit Association and a past Chair of the Virginia Board of Social Work. He was named to El Tiempo Latino’s Powermeter 100 list in 2019 and has been recognized as one of Alexandria Chamber’s 40 under 40 honorees.
