Councilman Canek Aguirre was elected Vice Chair of the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board (TPB) for 2026 at the TPB’s December 17th meeting. Aguirre has served on the Transportation Planning Board since 2019. He served as Chair of the TPB’s Access for All Committee in 2021 and 2022.
Aguirre was recently selected to chair the Enhanced Mobility Selection Committee which recommended $10.7 million in funding for 25 projects that improve mobility for older adults and individuals with disabilities across the region, including new vehicles for paratransit in Alexandria.
Councilman Aguirre also represents Alexandria on the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission (NVTC) and the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority’s Planning Coordination Advisory Committee. Aguirre served as Chair of NVTC in 2022 and has led the NVTC Legislative & Policy Committee since 2023. Aguirre is an alternate on both the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) Board of Directors and the Virginia Railway Express (VRE) Board of Directors.
Additionally, in January 2025, Councilman Aguirre was appointed to the National League of Cities (NLC) Transportation and Infrastructure Services Committee which leads NLC’s federal policy agenda and advocacy on transportation.
