Alexandria, Va. — Councilman Canek Aguirre has been selected to The Hunt Institute's inaugural cohort of Virginia Hunt State Policy Fellows. Aguirre is one of 17 leaders from across the Commonwealth to participate in the program which aims to strengthen the capacity of Virginia’s policymakers to drive meaningful change in education.
“I’m excited to be a part of this inaugural cohort committed to strengthening education policy and improving student success,” said Councilman Canek Aguirre. “My passion for education was fostered at an early age by helping my mother in her classroom and watching her write lesson plans and grade her student’s work at our dinner table. Ensuring all children have the tools and support to succeed from cradle to career continues to be one of my top priorities.”
Councilman Aguirre is a longtime champion for education and has increased investment in Alexandria’s schools and youth. Aguirre’s background in education includes working with head start and early head start programs across Northern Virginia, tutoring underserved and at-risk youth, and serving students and families in Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS). Prior to working in the health sector, Aguirre was the parent liaison at G.W. Middle School before being promoted to help start the ACPS Family and Community Engagement (FACE) Center in 2012.
