Alexandria City Councilman Canek Aguirre is stepping into a new role as Vice President of the Virginia Transit Association (VTA). His election, which took place at the VTA’s 48th Annual Conference and Expo in Richmond, was unanimous.

According to its website, the VTA  provides public education and legislative advocacy to support public transportation systems throughout the Commonwealth. The VTA has 125+ total members, which include transit properties, businesses, regional entities, and non-profit and organizational associate members.

“Transit connects people to jobs, school, health care, places of worship, businesses, and supports a cleaner environment,” said Councilman Canek Aguirre. “I’m excited to take on this new role and continue to work alongside VTA members to advocate for public transportation systems throughout Virginia.”

Aguirre also represents Alexandria on several key regional committees, including the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission, the Metropolitan Washington Council of Government’s Transportation Planning Board, and the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority’s Planning Coordination Advisory Committee.

Since 2023, Aguirre has been leading NVTC’s Legislative & Policy Committee, following his tenure as NVTC Chair in 2022. He also serves as an alternate on both the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority Board of Directors and the Virginia Railway Express Board of Directors.
