Winter Storm Resources

Winter is coming! The first winter storm of the year is expected to bring heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain beginning Saturday evening through Monday, January 26. Governor Spanberger has declared a state of emergency in preparation of the storm. The expected snow accumulation and ice combined with prolonged low temperatures are expected to impact travel with the potential for power outages.

I encourage you to plan ahead and avoid travel during and immediately after the storm if possible. Check local news, sign up for eNews alerts, and monitor the City's website and social media to stay informed.

In case you missed it, I joined Dreamers Mothers in Action for a Facebook live conversation tonight and shared tips and resources in Spanish. You can watch the video recording here.

Here are a few tips and resources to be prepared:

Prepare Your Home and Car

Stock your emergency supplies and prepare your home and car for winter weather. Prevent pipes from freezing by allowing faucets to drip and keeping cabinet doors open. Visit the Virginia Department of Emergency Management's website for more tips.

Report Power Outages

During and following the storm, report power outages to Dominion Energy directly online at dominionenergy.com or call 866-DOM-HELP (866-366-4357).

Report Incidents via Alex311

To report snowstorm related emergencies and complaints about compliance with the sidewalk ordinance, call 311 or 703.746.4311 or contact the City online at alexandriava.gov/Alex311. If you have a life-threatening emergency, call 911.

Snow Shoveling Tips

The Alexandria Health Department shared snow shoveling tips in a helpful video on social media. Volunteer Alexandria is seeking Snow Buddy volunteers if you're able to help seniors and people with disabilities in need of snow removal assistance. Sign up here.

Winter Shelter

Starting at 7pm on Saturday, January 24, the City's Winter Shelter (2355-A Mill Road) will extend its hours and operate 24-hours until 10am on Wednesday, January 26 for individuals and families experiencing homelessness.

Track Snow Plow

City crews prioritize primary roads followed by secondary routes, then intermediate and residential streets. Learn more about the City's snow removal priorities at alexandriava.gov/Snow and track snow plowing efforts here.

Stay safe and warm!
